I probably shouldn’t admit to having favourite products, but bone broth has always been one of my MVPs (most valued players) when it comes to simple additions to a dog’s bowl. It’s one of those additions that is versatile, easy to feed, and really useful in so many situations.
So, let me explain why Forthglade’s new Bone Broth Toppers have quickly become one of my favourite additions to the bowl.

What is Bone Broth?
Bone broth contains naturally occurring minerals and compounds such as glucosamine and chondroitin, alongside gelatine and glycine. Gelatine provides a unique amino acid profile and is particularly rich in glycine. Glycine plays many important roles in the body, helping support connective tissues, muscle repair, normal nervous system function and the body’s natural antioxidant processes.
Why Might You Feed Bone Broth?
Hydration
Dogs regulate body temperature very differently to humans. Whilst we rely heavily on sweating to cool ourselves down, dogs have very limited sweat glands. Instead, they primarily regulate temperature through panting. As air moves rapidly across the respiratory tract during panting, water evaporates and heat is lost from the body.
The downside is that dogs can lose a surprising amount of fluid this way, particularly:
- during warm weather
- after exercise
- during training or competition
- when travelling
- during periods of stress or excitement
Some dogs are naturally poor drinkers, especially when away from home or distracted by activity. Adding moisture directly into food can therefore be a very practical way to support fluid intake throughout the day.
This is one reason I like broth toppers so much. Rather than trying to encourage a dog to stop and drink, you are increasing moisture intake through something they already enjoy doing: eating dinner.
Bone broth toppers can be especially useful over dry food, helping add moisture whilst also making meals more appealing.
Fussy Eaters
Sometimes simply changing the smell, texture and moisture of a meal can completely change how interested a dog is in their food.
Enrichment
Bone broth can be poured into an icecube tray and frozen into cubes or used over lick mats. Remember not to re-freeze if it’s already thawed.
During Recovery
Bone broth is generally gentle on digestion and can help make meals more tempting during recovery periods where appetite is reduced.
Supporting Dogs During Mild Illness
If a vet has advised home care during mild or acute illness, increasing moisture intake and encouraging food intake can sometimes become part of supportive management. Broth can be a very useful tool here because it is light, palatable and easy to add to meals.
Of course, broth is never a replacement for veterinary treatment, but it can be a helpful nutritional addition alongside professional advice.
Athletes, Working and Competition Dogs
For active, working and competition dogs, bone broth can be a really useful addition to the diet. Dogs lose fluid through panting during exercise and excitement, so maintaining hydration is an important part of supporting performance and recovery.
Adding broth to meals is an easy way to increase moisture intake whilst also encouraging appetite after training, travel or competition. Because broth is gentle on digestion and naturally palatable, it can work particularly well for dogs that are reluctant to eat or drink during busy training or competition days.

The Benefits of Each Recipe
Bone broth already offers plenty of benefits on its own, but Forthglade’s toppers also include carefully selected ingredients designed to support different areas of wellbeing.
Rich Beef
The beef recipe includes blueberries alongside glucosamine and chondroitin. Blueberries contain naturally occurring plant compounds and antioxidants, whilst glucosamine and chondroitin are widely used in nutritional support for joints and mobility. This makes it a great option for active dogs, older dogs, or dogs involved in regular training and exercise.
Hearty Chicken
The chicken recipe contains inulin, MOS (mannan-oligosaccharides) and pumpkin. These ingredients are commonly included in digestive support formulations because they help support the gut environment and normal digestive function.
This is the recipe I would instinctively reach for with dogs needing a little digestive support, fussy eaters, or dogs recovering from mild tummy upsets where a vet has advised home management and feeding support.
Juicy Pork
The pork recipe includes green lipped mussel, glucosamine, chondroitin and turmeric. These ingredients are commonly associated with joint and mobility support, particularly in active or ageing dogs. Again, this makes it a very practical option for working dogs, sporting dogs, or older companions who benefit from additional joint-focused nutritional support.
Whilst toppers are not designed to replace a complete and balanced diet, they can complement it in a simple and practical way.

A Simple Addition That Can Make a Big Difference
Nutrition doesn’t need to be complicated to be useful. A small addition such as a bone broth topper can help increase moisture intake, improve palatability, support enrichment, and add extra nutritional ingredients to everyday meals.
Forthglade’s Bone Broth Toppers are a simple way to bring a little more flavour, moisture and goodness to your dog’s bowl as part of a balanced approach to feeding.
