Is grain free food good for dogs?

As dog owners, we want nothing more than ensuring our dogs are healthy and happy. A key part of this is making sure the food we choose to feed them is as healthy, nutritional and tasty as it can be. Watch this video of Dr James Greenwood, Media Vet and Forthglade Ambassador, on what to look for in your dogs food.

Switching By Day

A Handy Guide

"When transitioning your dog onto a new diet, it is particularly important to do this gradually and to avoid any sudden changes. This allows your dog’s digestive system to adapt with the switch and remain in balance. As a minimum, allow 5 full days to gradually reduce their current diet whilst simultaneously increasing their new food with each meal. For dogs with sensitive tummies, go even slower and transition over 1-2 weeks"

FAQs

Whilst there isn’t a set definition for hypoallergenic we know that, as all our recipes are clearly labelled with fully transparent ingredients, including clearly identifiable protein, our food is considered hypoallergenic. However, it is always important to read the ingredients carefully because whether or not a recipe is truly hypoallergenic for your dog, depends on the intolerance they have. If there is anything you are unsure of, we would recommend you reach out to your vet.

We have a range of grain free recipes which can be found on our grain free page, perfect for even the most sensitive tummies. Please note that we produce our grain free dog food recipes in a factory that does also handle products containing grains.

When changing a pet’s diet it’s crucial to do it gradually in order to be gentle on their digestive system.

Ideally the new diet should be added to their current food in very small portions over a 5 day period, increasing this small amount each day until eventually you are feeding your pet 100% Forthglade.

Here is some advice from Dr James Greenwood, Media Vet and Forthglade Ambassador:

"When transitioning your dog onto a new diet, it is particularly important to do this gradually and to avoid any sudden changes. This allows your dog’s digestive system to adapt with the switch and remain in balance. As a minimum, allow 5 full days to gradually reduce their current diet whilst simultaneously increasing their new food with each meal. Sadly, many pet foods use colourings and flavourings which can massively effect animal behaviour and concentration.

Following a healthy, natural diet can have a positive impact on your pet’s behaviour, making them happier, healthier and calmer. We our proud that our wet food range contains no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives.

On average the calorie content of our complete wet recipes is 120-145 Kcal per 100g. The calorie content varies depending on the meat used in the recipe.

Our white fish recipes are at the lowest end of the calorie scale. Each recipe will contain detailed nutritional information both on the product page and product when sent.

On average, the calorie content of our Just 90% complementary food is 120-140 Kcal per 100g - slightly less than our complete meals because it's only part of the meal

Wheat & Gluten Free Dog Food

Grain free dog food is a recipe that doesn’t contain any grains, such as wheat, soy, corn, rice, oats or barley. However, these grain-free meals are no less nutritional or tasty than wholegrain variations. Typically, the grain content is replaced with fibrous and healthy vegetables, such as sweet potato or butternut squash, which adds necessary carbohydrate content often found in grains, as well as other vegetables such as peas, carrots and apples.

Wet & Dry Grain Free Dog Food

We have a wide range of grain free wet dog food recipes available, including ingredients like chicken, duck, salmon, lamb, turkey and venison – all made in Devon and gently cooked to retain as much natural flavour and goodness as possible. You'll find special recipes for puppies (2 months+), smaller dog breeds, and older dogs (7 years+) so that your dog is supported throughout all of their life.

If you're looking for a quality grain free kibble, such as our cold pressed or lightly baked ranges, you can be assured that the food you're giving your dog is balanced, natural and tasty

Benefits of grain free dog food

  • Can help dogs with sensitive digestion: Though most dogs can digest food containing grains without any issues, some dogs with more sensitive stomachs and digestion issues may struggle and so a grain-free diet may suit them well.

  • Essential for dogs with grain allergies: Though uncommon, allergies to grains do occur amongst certain dogs, and so to avoid any risks, some owners opt to avoid grain-free food as a precaution. You can find out more about food allergies in dogs in our other articles.

Our complete range of grain free food for dogs also includes our dry dog food and our natural dog treats*. Our full range is also classified as hypoallergenic. You can find out more about our hypoallergenic dog food here.

The best complete dog food is one your dog enjoys the most, so why not try our taster packs as a way to get started?
