make a commitment to others

Science shows that we are less likely to back down on our promises if others know we’ve made them. Find a friend or family member to walk with you when you can for an ‘accountability buddy.

join a dog walking group or sign up for a charity walk

You’re far more likely to achieve your overall walking goal if you have a commitment to work towards such as a walk to raise money for charity, or if you are part of a local dog walking group. Check out The Great Dog Walk Together for setting up local walks with groups across the UK.

my dog has behaviour problems and we/I don’t enjoy walks

“Ignoring behaviour problems will not benefit yourself or your dog. If this is the case, then work on it and seek some professional help if needed – for serious problems such as aggression or nervousness, contact a behaviourist at www.apbc.org.uk . If your dog doesn’t come back when called, join a local training class to get some help with getting your dogs’ attention around distractions. If you have a strong dog, use a headcollar or harness to help you train your dog not to pull.”
