Packaging Technologist / Technical Assistant Opportunity

Location: Okehampton, Devon.

Hours: 8.30am - 4.30pm Mon-Fri, flexibility outside of these hours needed to meet business demands.

Pay: Dependant on experience

Holiday: 23 days + Bank Holidays

Reporting into: New Product Development Manager


Role Summary


It’s an exciting time to join the Forthglade family in our state-of-the-art factory in Okehampton. We’ve been proudly producing natural pet food in Devon since 1971 and things have changed a lot since then. Today we produce more than 750,000 trays of food for dogs every week, but one thing remains the same; customers remain at the heart of what we do.


This is an exciting role as we continue to expand our product offerings in wet dog food, treats and cold pressed.


Role specifics

Main duties & responsibilities


        • Responsible for packaging development and transit trials to include NPD and EPD at site and through co-manufacture facilities
    • Artwork approval, attend print passes, on site verification, first production review and supply chain performance
    • Support NPD trials and report writing
    • Manage on site product and packaging reviews
    • Specification management
    • Deputy for Quality Systems Manager role to include:
      BRC Food Safety Standard – Systems Maintenance; Internal Audit Program Maintenance; Customer Complaint Investigations, KPI Data Input and Trending; Supplier Approval; Pest Control.
    • Specialism / areas to develop specialism: Packaging Development, Animal nutrition, Pet food legislation, full understanding of process capabilities at all sites to ensure successful delivery of new products and processes.


Person Specification

Knowledge & experience


  • Degree qualified in a food related discipline
  • Experience of working in the food industry, ideally within a packaging technologist position or a technical department role
  • Project management experience

  • To succeed in this role you will need to be focussed, have excellent time management skills and high attention to detail
  • Ability to building strong working relationships with suppliers and printers
  • The role requires a self-motivated individual with the ability to prioritise and manage own time effectively, working independently or under direction
  • Must be trustworthy, reliable and punctual
  • A proactive approach and a willingness to show initiative and solve problems will also be required
  • Flexibility in your role to meet the needs of the business is a requirement of this role e.g. trial timings outside of normal work hours
  • Some travel may be required to attend print passes and co-manufacture facilities
