Health & Safety Coordinator

Location: Okehampton, Devon.

Hours: 8.30am - 4.30pm Mon-Fri, flexibility outside of these hours needed to meet business demands.

Salary: Dependant on experience

Holiday: 22 days + Bank Holidays

Reporting into: Quality, Health & Safety Manager


Role Summary


It’s an exciting time to join the Forthglade family in our new-state-of-the-art factory in Okehampton. We’ve been proudly producing natural pet food in Devon since 1971 and things have changed a lot since then. Today we produce more than 750,000 trays of food for dogs every week, but one thing remains the same; customers remain at the heart of what we do.


This is an exciting role as we continue to expand our product offerings in wet dog food, treats and cold-pressed dry food.

The successful candidate will have a strong focus on Health and Safety to ensure legal compliance is maintained within the business.


Role specifics

Main duties & responsibilities


        • Keep up to date with legislation and communicate changes and updates with Forthglade
        • Prepare H&S strategies, develop internal policies, maintain H&S site inductions, visitor procedures and keep H&S documentation up to date.
        • Work with all departments to ensure H&S policies, procedures, rules and regulations are in place and adhered to.
        • Co-ordinate and promote the reporting of hazards, near missies, incidents, unsafe conditions with a focus on improvements and its completion
        • Track and report accidents, reported hazards, near misses and incidents
        • Complete site inspections to identify and advise areas of good performance and areas for improvement
        • Carry out risk assessment with a focus on risk reductions and controls.
        • Co-ordinate and support the workplace risk assessment program
        • Co-ordinate First Aid teams (certificates/ training / equipment etc)
        • Track, organise and where applicable deliver H&S training
        • Provide PPE guidance
        • Co-ordinate occupational health surveillance

Person Specification

Knowledge & experience


  • H&S qualifications with a strong knowledge of H&S in the workplace – as a minimum NEBOSH certificate in Occupational Health & Safety
  • Experience of working in a H&S qualified role (preferably within a factory environment)
  • Experience of working with ISO45001 (or previously OHSAS 18001)

  • To succeed in this role, you will need to be focussed, have excellent time management skills and high attention to detail
  • The ability to work independently as well as constructively within teams to enable the building of strong working relationships with FG team including contractors and visitors
  • The role requires a self-motivated individual with the ability to prioritise and manage own time effectively
  • Must be trustworthy, reliable and punctual
  • A proactive approach and a willingness to show initiative and solve problems will also be required
  • Flexibility in your role to meet the needs of the business is a key commitment in this role
