FAQ’s & Help

Below we’ve answered our most frequently asked questions.  If you can’t find what you’re looking for here or you have a query about Forthglade or any of our products, then please do get in touch and we’ll be happy to answer any of your questions.

  • Does Forthglade ever use any nasties in recipes?

Forthglade recipes are 100% natural. All our meals are free from artificial colours, flavours and preservatives. We live by a ‘free from junk and fillers’ promise. Our recipes are also free from Soya and commonly used ‘bulking’ agents and contain no wheat gluten, dairy or eggs.

  • Where is Forthglade food made?

All our wet food recipes are in Devon, on the edge of Dartmoor, where as well as using 100% natural ingredients, we source locally as much as possible to keep our ‘food miles’ to a minimum.  We’re very proud to be a UK food manufacturer and to be able to support UK farming and its wonderful produce.

We work very closely with a team of  like-minded dog lovers in Germany to produce our new range of cold pressed natural dry food for dogs. We were very lucky to find a team who are both experts in the technique of cold-pressing – and who share our belief in nourishing the relationship you have with your dog through a good quality natural diet. The general manager alone has at least 15 dogs roaming around on his farm with him!

  • Who tests your pet foods?

Our pet foods are tested by a number of independent pet food authorities and independent nutritionists.  We receive SALSA accreditation for our pet food manufacturing and are regularly audited by the APHA, who were previously known as DEFRA.

As all our foods are free from artificial colours, flavourings or preservatives.  There is no animal testing as no nasties are used to require testing, just natural goodness.

  • Why is a Forthglade diet so beneficial for my pet?

You’ve heard it before, ‘you are what you eat’ and this is just as relevant for your pet as it is to you. A good diet is crucial to your pet’s health and wellbeing. At Forthglade our aim has remained the same since we opened our doors in 1971; to produce a nutritiously balanced diet with natural and premium quality ingredients, sourcing from across the UK as much as possible. You just need to see and smell our food to appreciate the quality.

  • Can I freeze Forthglade?

Forthglade wet meals can be frozen but we recommend transferring the contents into a freezer-safe container. It should not be frozen for more than three months.  Each pack whilst unopened has a shelf life of 18 months from the date of manufacturing – which will be stamped on the side of each individual tray.

  • How do I know how much Forthglade to feed my pet?

For detailed feeding guidelines please refer to the product feeding tables available on each product page.

These recommended guides may vary from dog to dog based on variants such as exercise levels, breed, age or specific health requirements.  Owners who feel their dog may need less or more food than average should seek advice from their veterinary practitioner, to ensure tailored advice to each individual pet’s needs.  For overweight dogs, daily amounts should generally be based on target weight not actual weight.

Please be aware that treats will add to your dog’s calorie intake.

Store food in a cool place. Once opened, please keep refrigerated and use within 48 hours. Meals are best served at room temperature.

  • How long can I store Forthglade in the fridge?

You can safely store your opened trays of Forthglade wet meals in the fridge for up to two days after opening, without any compromise to quality or palatability. The cover and sleeve make storage in the fridge safe and easy.

  • If the ingredient percentages in the composition do not add up to 100%, what is the remainder?

Ingredient percentages are given as a minimum percentage. There are no additional ingredients other than those stated on pack.

  • What is the difference between Forthglade's 'Just 90%' and Complete meals range?

Just 90% is our complementary wet range for dogs and has a minimum meat content of 90%.  It is teamed with minerals and just a small amount of water to help with the gentle steaming process for cooking. As a complementary wet food it should also be served with a good quality mixer in order for your pet to receive a fully balanced diet.

Our complete meals are just that,  complete and nutritionally balanced to provide optimum health for pets, whatever their age.

For cats we provide a complete meal grain free.

  • What type of mixer should be used with Just 90% products?

We recommend a quality natural wholemeal baked mixer in order to provide additional vitamins, minerals, carbs and fibre for a fully balanced diet.

  • Why do you add ingredients such as herbs?

Like human foods, many herbs are added to foods due to their benefits. For details of all our ingredients and their benefits to our pet’s health please refer to our ingredients page.

  • Why is the protein percentage of Forthglade products lower than that stated on dried foods?

The protein content of dried food is concentrated as the product is dehydrated. Once the fluid necessary to rehydrate the food is added, the original protein content will of course become heavily diluted.

  • Why is your pet food more expensive than other pet foods?

Our pet food is more expensive than some of the large brands simply due to the fact that we choose to use only high quality meat and fish and other nutritionally rich premium ingredients. We’re strongly against adding any ‘bulking agents’ to our meals and are free from artificial colours, flavours and preservatives.

As our meat content is so high, our meals contain more calories meaning that your pet will feel more full and satisfied quicker and so eat less.

  • Can I feed my kitten / puppy Forthglade meals?

All Forthglade meals are natural, full of wholesome goodness and gentle enough for all ages. However we specifically produce a puppy and a kitten food within our popular complete meal grain free and complete meal with brown rice, both for puppies, plus the Natural Lifestage range for cats. This recipe contains additional vitamins and minerals that are valuable in the growth and development of young animals. Please refer to the relevant product page for more detail.

  • Can I feed my older pet Forthglade food?

Elderly pets have specific dietary requirements as they have smaller appetites, burn less energy and benefit from highly digestible foods.  All Forthglade meals are natural and full of wholesome goodness and gentle enough for all ages. However we specifically produce a senior specific food for older cats and dogs above the age of 7 years. The complete meals also include a grain free recipe for pets that may suffer from common food allergies or have more sensitive tummies. Please refer to the relevant product page for more detail.

  • Can I feed my pregnant / nursing pet Forthglade food?

All our recipes are wonderfully nutritious, so ideal for nourishing pregnant or nursing pets. Many breeders across the UK are proud to both use and recommend Forthglade; which is why we will shortly be launching our UK Breeder Puppy Packs later this year.

  • Can a Forthglade diet help my overweight pet?

A Forthglade diet may be able to aid weight loss if appropriate portion controls are followed. Speak to your vet to be confident what amount is most suitable for your individual pet.

  • Do you do a low fat food?

We don’t specifically do a low fat range, however all our recipes are made using good quality ingredients and we don’t add any unnecessary oils, grease or fat. Our chicken & turkey recipes are likely to contain the lowest amount of fat as these are naturally the leanest meats.

  • How much water does my pet need?

Pets are great at keeping themselves properly hydrated, so you should ensure that they have access to clean fresh water 24 hours a day.

  • My pet is underweight, which Forthglade product would be most suitable?

For dogs all Just 90% meals and the complete meal ranges have a high meat content with no fillers, making them high in protein, so an ideal food. Based on the protein to fat ratio the following products would be most suitable to increase or maintain a healthy weight. In all cases adding a suitable mixer would be recommended to help boost weight:

Complete Adult Chicken and Liver, Just 90% Chicken and Tripe, Just 90% Chicken and Liver, Just 90% Chicken and Heart, Just 90% Beef, Just 90% Chicken.

  • My previous pet food made my puppy hyperactive. Can a Forthglade diet reduce this?

Sadly many pet foods use colourings and flavourings which can massively effect animal behaviour and concentration. Following a 100% natural diet can have a huge impact in improving a pet’s behaviour, making them happier, healthier and calmer.

  • What is the best way to change my pet’s current diet to Forthglade?

When changing a pet’s diet it’s crucial to do it gradually in order to be gentle on their digestive system. Ideally the new diet should be added to their current food in very small portions over a 7-day period, increasing this small amount each day until eventually you are feeding your pet 100% Forthglade.

  • Can I return products if I am unhappy with them?

We hope that you and your pet will be very happy with all our foods.  However if you are not satisfied, we are happy for you to return the goods to us.  Please read our returns policy at the base of the home page.
